On Saturday (August 30th) our group had a long day on a bus being driven around to see different towns. We got on the bus last and had the worst seats - over the wheel well. My knees were up near my chest during the entire ride because the wheel was right below where I was sitting. The bus was smaller than we expected and every seat was occupied. Fortunately it was air conditioned and they gave us bottled water. When we got back to the hotel we all had a buffet dinner which was very nice. Every one was tired and went to our rooms fairly early - 7:00 pm. Then it started!!
We heard some Costa Rican start to sing (very badly) in English over a loud speaker. Oh no, we thought. How long is this going to go on? It sounded like it was in the courtyard of the hotel. Turns out it was some function next door that had a Karaoke machine and one particular guy was loud and proud. The different songs ranged from the 80's back to the 60's. The worst was when he started singing the 60's classic "House of the Rising Sun". It was slow and long and tortuous.
We tried to think of possible solutions to drown out the noise. How about cranking up the AC? Nope - our room AC was one of the quiet ductless kind. How about ear plugs? Nope - didn't bring those. What about calling the front desk to call the police? Nope - that didn't work. How about my sleep machine? Hmmm... It was on 'Waterfall' noise and I turned that bad boy all the way up!! It helped, but we could still hear the guy's obnoxious hollering.
I was able to fall asleep for a while, but woke up at midnight with the guy still going strong - it had been 5 hours! It took me a while to fall back asleep and I woke up again at 3 am. Finally - no more karaoke! Back to sleep pretty quickly and then the alarm went off at 5:30 am. Time to get up for an early and very busy last day of the tour. I felt like a zombie.
