There are money differences just like any place would be outside of the US. The official currency here is the colon (which means Columbus in Spanish - after Christopher Colombus). However, most places are happy to take US dollars. The exchange rate is currently about 535 colones to 1 dollar. It takes some getting used to seeing the receipt (above) say "Total 12,000" for one salad and one chicken sandwich! The dollar equivalent would be about $16. The coins are quite large and heavy except for the 5 colones coin, which feels like funny money because it’s so light. The bills are different colors so it makes it easier to tell one from another. We have to get out our currency converter on Mark’s iPhone often. We are finding the supermarket prices are about as high as Maui. The prices are even higher for US imported goods. We are hoping to save money other ways like on rent and cell phones.
