Remember a few blogs ago about how hard the bed was and I asked my friend to ship a foam bed topper to us? Well, we didn't get the bed topper and learned A LOT about shipping. Our friend gets a great discount with Fed Ex to ship and bless her heart she wanted to ship me the foam bed topper so I could be a little more comfortable and get a decent nights sleep. She took the box which probably weighed 25 lbs to the shipping counter. The woman stated, "That will be $366 please (and that is after my friend's 75% discount) and we don't know how much the taxes and customs fees will be when it gets there." WHAT??? My friend emailed me and said "I didn't ship it because it was really expensive and I don't know if it will get to you and how much you have to pay when/if it does get there." BUMMER! - I thought.
We learned the next day in the seminar that shipping is a nightmare and VERY expensive. It is one of Costa Rica's way to obtain money for the government. The people are poor to middle class for the most part and so they charge a lot to gringos or corporations for getting items over the boarder. The best way to bring personal things into the country is in your suitcase on a flight into the country. It is cheaper to pay the airline $50 per checked bag then to ship anything any other way. Lesson learned.
