When living in or visiting another country, some things are similar and some things are different. One way to see both of these at the same time is in the grocery store. Similar things: plastic gallon size containers of milk, bottled water, boxed cereal, and even peanut M & Ms. Different things: eggs are in open containers and not refrigerated, meat is purchased at a butcher counter not pre-packed in a refrigerated case, salad dressing is not 50 different varieties and a half aisle, it's in a squeeze package and there are 4 to choose from: Thousand island, Italian, Caesar, and Ranch.
There are a lot of items in squeeze packages: mustard, mayonnaise, tomato sauce and other sauces, salad dressing, jam, honey, and syrup. It takes up less space to pack & ship, it takes up less space on the limited shelf space in the store and the package is easy to discard once used - makes sense to me! It is easier to store in the refrigerator too.
