At the Bed & Breakfast the owners have a pair of German shepherds - Lily (on left) and Max. They look like they could be from the same litter, but they are not. They are the watch dogs for the property. If you have a house in Costa Rica, then you probably have a dog or two and I'm not talking about a poodle or a dachshund. They are big and they are trained to protect.
Lily and Max keep a close eye on all the goings on. They come down the stairs to greet us every morning and lead us up to the breakfast table. They do not beg and typically lay away from the table while we eat (the owners do not want them to beg). I sneaked Lily a little piece of broccoli from the quiche and I got us both into trouble. Sorry, Lily!!
We went for a walk through the property and the "kids" followed us everywhere. Occasionally they honed in to find a lizard or some other critter to hunt and chase.
We went swimming later and the dogs went crazy. One of their favorite things to do is to jump and chomp (but not bark) at water that is splashed up into the air. Max goes super crazy when we splash water and foams at the mouth because he's so excited. When we'd swim from one side to the other, they would race to the other side and wait for us. Then race to the other side for our return. They could do this all day. I think they were more tired after our swim than we were. Here's a short video of Max and Lily engaging in their favorite activity:
