Now that we're in our bed & breakfast accommodations and on our own, our biggest challenge is to find a longer-term rental for us - wherever that might be. We only have a week and we have no transportation of our own.
When we arrived at the B&B, we told our hosts, Avtar and Jan, that our goal was to find a rental during the week we were staying with them. If they had any ideas or leads, we were open. Avtar said he would see what he could do.
Once we got settled in (Mon), we were back on the Internet, searching for rentals on Craigslist and other sources. We looked at an apartment complex that looked very promising, in Atenas. Tina had previously found this complex on Craigslist and it still looked like one of our top possibilities. I started to email the complex (via their web site) to get more information. However, I decided to wait until the next morning (Tues) to contact the apartment complex, to see what, if anything, Avtar might have uncovered.
The next morning, Avtar told us first thing that he had someone coming over that had a rental we might be interested in. A man arrived after breakfast and we all sat down to talk. His name was Alphonso and he's a Dutch expatriate (speaks excellent English, Spanish, Dutch and who-knows-what else). It didn't take long to figure out he was the owner of the SAME apartment complex I was going to contact the night before. How cool is that!
He was a very nice guy and offered to take us over to see the apartment complex. It turned out the complex was only about 5 minutes from the B&B - another amazing "coincidence." We really liked the complex and told him we were very interested. It's a small complex, with only about 18 units. Alphonso originally showed us a first floor unit. We loved the apartment but we really don't like being on the first floor of the complex (security and other considerations). He did have one on the 2nd floor that would be available for us but nothing on the 3rd floor (which was our #1 choice). He said he would reserve the unit for us - 2nd floor it is.
WOW, it was only the first day of our rental search and we already had a place that was really great AND it would be available the day we checked out of our B&B. Praise the Lord!!
This was a great start toward the biggest priority on our list. However, the day was young and we still had other big To Dos on our list. See Part 2 for the rest of the story.
